my 17 inch PowerBook G4 will not close. When lowering the screen, the lititle hooks pop out but they do not lock into the bottom of the computer. Is there a way I can fix this? I had already cleaned out the area where the hooks lock in.

My G4 17 has one-half your problem: one broken latch.
If you take out the battery and look at the latch area you may be able to see the damaged latches, Mine shows one is broken at the point the hook should engage. I know of no way to fix without replacing the latches in teh lower case, or using a rubber band.
Parts may be hard to find. I didn't find latches on a site that usually has PowerBook parts.
